Construit \u00e0 Brest en 1838, peint en noir avec ses trois batteries blanches, le \u00ab Borda \u00bb est le dernier trois-ponts \u00e0 voiles sans machine. Mouill\u00e9 en rade de Brest, \u00e0 un mille du port, il a servi de vaisseau-\u00e9cole de 1863 \u00e0 1890. (M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e, Afrique du Nord, Atlantique, Br\u00e9sil, Etats-Unis, Canada). Le vaisseau Jean-Bart dans le port de Brest. Affect\u00e9 comme vaisseau-\u00e9cole d\u2019application en octobre 1868. Il ne fera que quatre campagnes jusqu\u2019en 1873, ann\u00e9e de son d\u00e9sarmement \u00e0 Brest. Vaisseau \u00e0 voile et \u00e0 h\u00e9lice, son effectif est de 700 hommes, sa vitesse de croisi\u00e8re 10 n\u0153uds. Construite \u00e0 Lorient, la corvette \u00e0 h\u00e9lice Decr\u00e8s est mise \u00e0 l\u2019eau en 1866 et arm\u00e9e pour la premi\u00e8re fois en juin 1867. C\u2019est un navire mixte \u00e0 coque en bois de 64 m\u00e8tres de long, effectif de 152 hommes. Pour sa premi\u00e8re campagne, le Vaudreuil va naviguer dans les eaux de l\u2019Atlantique et du Pacifique, faisant la travers\u00e9e de Lorient \u00e0 Valparaiso par le d\u00e9troit de Magellan. Construite \u00e0 Rochefort, cette fr\u00e9gate a \u00e9t\u00e9 arm\u00e9e pour essais en avril 1871. Puis quittant l\u2019\u00eele d\u2019Aix en ao\u00fbt, elle effectue sa premi\u00e8re campagne dans les mers du Sud. Julien embarquera le 1er novembre 1871 sur ce navire qui est alors au mouillage \u00e0 Valparaiso. Le b\u00e2timent fera la croisi\u00e8re de Polyn\u00e9sie, revenant ensuite au port de Brest le 4 d\u00e9cembre 1872. Jamais la mer n\u2019a berc\u00e9 sur ses lames une plus gigantesque et plus formidable machine de guerre. Sa longueur, de quatre-vingt-un m\u00e8tres, d\u00e9passe de dix m\u00e8tres celle des plus grands vaisseaux. Ses vastes batteries, arm\u00e9es de cent trente-deux bouches \u00e0 feu du plus gros calibres, pourraient en recevoir cent quarante-six. Douze cents hommes composent son \u00e9quipage. Sa machine \u00e0 h\u00e9lice est de la force de douze cents chevaux. Lors de ses exp\u00e9riences, il a atteint une vitesse de treize milles \u00e0 l\u2019heure. Son aspect est celui d\u2019un gigantesque steamer, par la disproportion de ses m\u00e2ts et de sa voilure, &#8211; qui sont toutefois ceux d\u2019un vaisseau de son rang, &#8211; avec la longueur de sa coque. Pour l\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9gance des lignes, la solidit\u00e9 de la car\u00e8ne, la rapidit\u00e9 de la marche et la facilit\u00e9 des \u00e9volutions, c\u2019est la plus \u00e9clatante manifestation des sciences navales et le chef-d\u2019\u0153uvre de l\u2019art nautique. Ce b\u00e2timent \u00e0 voile et \u00e0 vapeur, muni de roues \u00e0 aubes, effectue au S\u00e9n\u00e9gal sa premi\u00e8re campagne. L\u2019enseigne de vaisseau Julien Viaud doit s\u2019y embarquer \u00e0 partir du 21 septembre 1873. Il y est embarqu\u00e9 du 1er octobre 1891 (Toulon) au 22 novembre 1891 (Villefranche). A longueur d\u2019ann\u00e9e, il est ancr\u00e9 pr\u00e8s du pont international d\u2019Hendaye.
